Tupelo is located in the northeastern section of Mississippi and serves as the county seat for Lee County, Mississippi’s largest county. Tupelo is the seventh largest city in Mississippi with a population of about 34,500 according to the 2010 United States Census. The area in which Tupelo is located was first occupied by Chickasaw and Choctaw Native Americans. During the Civil war, the Battle of Tupelo was fought in the area. After the Civil War ended, a railroad was constructed that encouraged the city’s industry and growth. The city eventually changed its name from Black Gum to Tupelo in honor of the battle fought in the area and was incorporated as a city in 1870.
Tupelo has many things to see and do, both within the city and within the city’s surrounding area. The Oren Dunn City Museum is housed in Tupelo. The museum displays the rich history of Tupelo through various exhibits. The city is also home to various Civil War sites such as the Tupelo and Brices Cross Roads historic battlefields. Also, the city is home to the historic Elvis Presley Birthplace museum.
Tupelo experiences very mild winters and hot, humid summers. The months of December, January, and February have daytime temperatures that average in the low to mid-50s. Residents should invest in a heating system capable of keeping indoor temperatures comfortable during the cooler months of the year. Summers in Tupelo tend to be very warm and humid. Temperatures often climb into the 90s during the day and dip into the 70s at night.
