About Starkville, MS - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Starkville is a Mississippi city located in Oktibbeha County. Starkville is the primary city of the Starkville Micropolitan Statistical Area and is the county seat of Oktibbeha County. According to the 2010 United States Census, Starkville has a population of almost 24,000 people. Mississippi State University is located on the eastern side of the city. The university serves as the largest employer of the residents in Starkville.
Starkville is said to have been first inhabited over 2,100 years ago. After the American Revolutionary War, the Choccuma Indian tribe moved into the area. White settlers followed shortly thereafter once the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek was signed in 1830. Starkville, then known as Boardtown, was formed five years later and established as the county seat of Oktibbeha County. Boardtown was then renamed as Starkville in honor of General John Stark, a Revolutionary War Hero.
Starkville is filled with many entertaining things to see and do. Arts in Starkville are very strongly supported by the community. For instance, the Starkville Community Theater Company in the city’s downtown puts on many award-winning productions and is a prominent feature of the city. There are also many recreational activities available in the area including the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, a 48,000-acre outdoor paradise. Hunting, fishing, birdwatching, and hiking are a few of the activities provided by the wildlife refuge.
Starkville is located in a humid subtropical climate. Summers in the city are usually very warm with high levels of humidity. Residents will find it wise to invest in a cooling system that is capable of keeping indoor temperatures comfortable. During the warmer months of the year, an efficient cooling system can literally be a lifesaver.
Despite Starkville’s location in the United States, the city is not immune to cold weather. Freezing temperatures and cold snaps can frequent the area, so residents will want to invest in a furnace or heat pump to remain comfortable during the months of winter. Residents should also have these systems inspected by an HAC technician to ensure they are operating efficiently.
