About Okolona, MS - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Okolona, Mississippi is a city located in Monroe County. According to the 2010 census, Okolona has a population of about 2,000 people. Okolona is located in the northern portion of Mississippi and is about 30 miles east of the Alabama state line. Okolona was originally a settlement named Rose Hill in 1845. The city’s title was changed in 1850 and is named after a Chickasaw warrior, Oka-laua, meaning peaceful.
Many civil war battles took place in and around Okolona, so there are many historical places to visit in the city. Although much of the original structures that were built in the city were destroyed during the war, few structures still remain like the Elliot Donaldson House. The historic mansion was built in 1850 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city is also home to the Battle of Okolona which took place in 1864 and was fought between the troops of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest and Union Brigadier General William Sooy Smith. Okolona also has many public and private recreational facilities and is located only a few miles from the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.
Okolona tends to experience mild winters due to its location in a humid subtropical climate. Temperatures during the coldest months of the year in Okolona remain in the mid to low-50s on average. However, cold snaps and snow are still possible in the area. Residents will find it wise to invest in a heating pump or furnace in order to keep indoor temperatures at comfortable levels during the colder months of the year.
Summers in Okolona are often warm and humid. It is not uncommon for thermostat readings to climb into the 90s. A central air conditioning unit will be necessary during this time of year. In fact, it can literally be a lifesaver. And by upgrading to an energy efficient model, residents will enjoy lower monthly utility bills.
