Columbus was founded in 1821 as a result of the failure of a settlement across the Tombigbee River. The settlement, named Plymouth, was flooded and as a result Columbus was established on the other side of the river. Before Columbus was incorporated as a city it was informally referred to as Possum Town, a name given to the settlement by local Native Americans. During the American Civil War, Columbus housed an arsenal that made gunpowder, handguns, and cannons. Columbus was also known as a hospital town during the American Civil War.
