Aberdeen is located in the northwestern corner of Mississippi and serves as the county seat of Monroe County. According to the 2010 census, Aberdeen has a population of about 5,600 people. The city is located about 160 miles north of Jackson, Mississippi and about 80 miles southwest of Oxford, Mississippi.
Aberdeen is positioned on the banks of the Tombigbee River and was one of the busiest ports in Mississippi during the 19th century. Aberdeen was once a major hub for cotton trading and was also the second largest city in the state. During the 15th century, Hernando DeSoto and his crew were the first Europeans to set foot in the vicinity of Aberdeen. The city was settled in 1834 and was chartered in 1849.
Aberdeen has many local things to see and do. The city has over 200 buildings that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Each spring Aberdeen hosts an annual pilgrimage to the many historic antebellum homes located in its limits. Aberdeen Lake is a very popular recreational spot located not far from the city. The lake is formed by Aberdeen Lock and Dam. The lake offers various activities such as boating, kayaking, and fishing.
Aberdeen is located in a humid subtropical climate. The area is characterized by hot, humid summers and mild winters. Daytime temperatures during the warmer months of the year average in the upper-80s to the lower-90s. At night, temperatures dip into the low-70s. Individuals will find it wise to invest in a cooling system capable of keeping indoor temperatures comfortable during the hot, humid days of summer. Individuals will also want to invest in a heating system. Despite the area’s typically mild winters, temperatures can dip well below freezing. Maintaining regular maintenance on these heating and cooling systems will be necessary in order to remain comfortable during Aberdeen’s summers and winters.
